Stand Firm Against the Enemy: Ephesians 6:10-13

Stand Firm 2 by David Peacock Listen on Posterous

I. Our Enemy’s Identity

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Revelation 12:9

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” Genesis 3:1

And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

“Satan” appears 54 times

“Devil” appears 34 times

“Beelzebul” appears 7 times

“Evil one, deceiver, adversary”

“Demon” appears 80 times

II. Our Enemy’s Intentions

. . . so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs. 2 Corinthians 2:11

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. Mark 4:15

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2 Corinthians 4:4

God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:25–26

III. Our Enemy’s Influence

And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, Luke 4:5

And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” Luke 13:16

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Ephesians 4:25–27

because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us. 1 Thessalonians 2:18

Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. Luke 22:3–6

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31–32

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 1 John 5:18–19

IV. Our Enemy’s Defeat-ability

·         Our enemy is not invincible.  Although we are no match for his strength, he is no match for God's.  And since God is for us, it does not matter who is against, including the devil and his demons!  He is defeatable because he has already been defeated!

Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” Revelation 12:12

In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. Colossians 2:15, NLT

·         Both Christians & demons know & fear the name of Jesus.  We fear with reverence and draw close.  They cower in fear and flee.

·         The mortal wound has been laid.  The death blow has been throw.  Yes, Satan will battle till the end but we know the end and so does he!

·         If Satan reminds you of your past, remind him of his future!

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41

Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side?  Job 1:9–10

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Romans 16:20

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. John 17:15

But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3

Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are. 1 Peter 5:9

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

2. Stand firm with Conviction.

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

3. Stand firm with Courage.

25.165 ἀνδρίζομαι: (a figurative extension of meaning of ἀνδρίζομαι ‘to be manly’ or ‘to become a man,’ not occurring in the NT) to exhibit courage in the face of danger—‘to be brave, to be courageous.’ στήκετε ἐν τῇ πίστει, ἀνδρίζεσθε, κραταιοῦσθε ‘stand firm in the faith; be brave; be strong’ 1 Cor 16:13.[1]

4. Stand firm with Confidence.

Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” Daniel 6:21–22

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6

I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14

5. Stand firm with Compassion.

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 1 John 3:16

Fortress: With God as our fortress, Next week (how you can make your God your fortress) 2-4 others passages in Scripture that speak of God as a fortress – Repetitive Reinforcement

I.                    With God as your fortress, you have help when trouble comes!

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Refuge – Does anyone here need God to be a refuge?

Strength – Does anyone here need God to be their strength?

Help – Does anyone here need God to be their help?

Trouble – God does not promise that life will be trouble free.  He promises He will be our help if we make Him our fortress.

Very Present – there when we need Him.  Well Proven – He has proven He is a help to His people and will continue to be so!

II.                  With God as your fortress, you can face crisis with faith instead of fear!

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:28–33

·         Not a bad day (Not a bad hair day)

·         Not a difficult day – Not even a big tragedy

·         This is a major catastrophe.  This earth just exploded.  His world blew up.  Earthquake.  Tsunami.

Not fear – Faith.  Look to the One who is unseen.  TO the one who sets the boundaries for the waters!

III.                With God as your fortress, you can trust that joy will emerge again!

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37–39

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:1–2

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

V.                 With God as your fortress, you can rest knowing He will be exalted!

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Be still. Be faithful to do what God has called you to do but stop doping that which only God can do.  Let God be God.  He is at work and He will glorify Himself.  He will make His name great in all the earth. Througout the nations.  In our community.  In our church.  In our families.  In our lives
